Where we are, and where we’ve been

2020 has repeatedly tested K-12 educators’ collective mettle. A global pandemic thrust us into the largely unknown territory of virtual learning without meaningful training or support. George Floyd’s heart-wrenching public death catalyzed a national recognition of the collective trauma of systemic racism and the undeniable reality that Black Lives Matter. We find ourselves in a time of uncertainty, and we know it is a time to create change.

The STEM Ed Innovators fellowship has worked with STEM educators across the country to democratize STEM classrooms for historically marginalized students for the last decade. We have worked to challenge inequity in schools through our STEM Ed workshop series. Our recent experiences with virtual learning spaces make it clear this work is more important than ever.

It is not enough to just use technology; we must ensure we are using it in ways that promote equity in our classrooms and for our students. While we don’t have all the answers, we do know how to create collaborative spaces for teachers to unleash their professional capital and innovate together so students don’t encounter barriers to lifelong learning.

Where we’re going

STEMocratic Design Dash:  How will you re-imagine teaching and learning this year based on your teaching circumstances?

Regardless of teaching circumstances in the fall, teachers can work together to ensure all students experience the quality STEM education they deserve.

In the 90-minute Design Dash, teachers will work through a structured process facilitated by our Master Teachers to empathize with each other, define problems, develop prototype teaching practices, test and refine ideas and share results. Teachers will come away with a clearer idea of how to structure their classrooms (virtually, hybrid, or in-person), and how they want teaching and learning to happen.

We invite you to join us for our first ever STEMocratic Design Dash.  We’re offering two identical 90 minute workshops on Tuesday, September 1st at 5 pm EDT and Wednesday September 2nd at 7 pm EDT.  Please click the button above to register.

A note

The Design Dash is intended to be a collaborative space for all K-12 STEM teachers to brainstorm, ideate, and network. Teachers interested in continued support, networking, and professional development this fall can apply for the 3-month STEM Ed Innovators Fellowship this Fall, which will build off their work started at the Design Dash.
